While many thought the 22-year-old Spaniard could still roll on to a record fifth straight title in, Soderling refused to let it happen.

As his attempt at an angled volley looped wide in the second tiebreaker of the match, Nadal was finally brought down on his favorite surface on which he has piled up 150 wins against six losses including the most vicious one.

"I lost. That's what I can say," said Nadal, "I played very short and I made him very easy to play at this level. When a player plays bad, he must lose."

"This is not a tragedy, losing here in Paris. It had to happen one day. I have to accept it with the same calm when I lose as when I win," he added.

Also on clay, Nadal had overwhelmed Soderling, 6-1, 6-0, earlier this season in the Round of 16 in Rome, but he insisted he was not surprised by his opponent's powerful performance this time.

"He didn't surprised me, because I know how he play, how dangerous he can be." he said.

"So it was my fault. Sure, he did very well. But I didn't play my tennis and for that reason I lost." he added.

Soderling tried to stay cool as he braced himself for "the biggest moment so far" of his career.

"I'm very, very happy. I couldn't even dream of this before the match, so I will remember this match for the rest of my life. But I also want to try to concentrate on the next matches, so I don't want to feel too happy.

"I kept telling myself, this is just another match. I don't care if it's the fourth round in French Open against Nadal. This is just like any other match. That helped me." he added.

Taken from: www.chinaview.cn 2009-06-01 10:08:14Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013148795725284563.post-29126927665732813282009-05-31T14:07:00.000-07:002009-05-31T17:45:15.479-07:00Day seven (7) - It is the second of the Grand Slam tournaments on the annual tennis calendar and the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world. It is one of the most prestigious events in tennis, and it has the widest worldwide broadcasting and audience of all regular events in this sport.Because of the slow playing surface and the five-set men's singles matches without a tiebreak in the final set, the event is widely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.

Officially named in French the Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros or Tournoi de Roland-Garros (the "French Internationals of Roland Garros" or "Roland Garros Tournament" in English), the tournament is often referred to as the "French Open" and sometimes simply as "Roland Garros".

The event began as a national tournament in 1891 as the Championat de France International de Tennis. The first women's tournament was held in 1897. In 1912, the French tournament was held with a different surface (at the time all tennis played was lawn tennis), a red clay ("terre battue"), made up from the crushed wastes of red brick. The tournament was open only to tennis players who were licensed in France through 1924.

In 1925, the French Championships opened itself to international competitors with the event held on a grass surface alternately between the Racing Club de France and the Stade Francais. After the Mousquetaires or Philadelphia Four (René Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet, and Jacques Brugnon) won the Davis Cup on American soil in 1927, the French decided to defend the cup in 1928 at a new tennis stadium at Porte d’Auteuil. The Stade de France had offered the tennis authorities three hectares of land with the condition that the new stadium must be named after the World War I pilot, Roland Garros. The new Stade de Roland Garros, and its Center Court, which was named Court Philippe Chatrier in 1988, hosted that Davis Cup challenge.

Suzanne Lenglen Court at Roland Garros.

From 1945 through 1947, the French Championships were held after Wimbledon, making it the third Grand Slam event of the year.

In 1968, the French Championships became the first Grand Slam tournament to go open, allowing both amateurs and professionals to compete.

Since 1981, new prizes have been presented Prix Orange (the most fair-play and the most press friendly player), Prix Citron (the player with the strongest character, personality) and Prix Bourgeon (the tennis player revelation of the year).

Another novelty, since 2006 the tournament has begun on a Sunday, featuring 12 singles matches played on the three main courts.

Additionally, on the eve of the tournament's opening, the traditional Benny Berthet exhibition day takes place, where the profits go to different charity associations.

In March 2007, it was announced that the event will provide equal prize money for both men and women in all rounds for the first time ever.

Rafael Nadal has won the tournament 4 times and is attempting this year at the French Open to win a fifth time.

Racketlon

Taken from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia. org/wiki/French_Open
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013148795725284563.post-58866056648961551702009-05-24T14:02:00.000-07:002009-05-24T14:11:01.195-07:00Roland-Garros Results: Ivo Karlovic Loses to Hewitt23 may 2009

It was a frustrating but yet rewarding match for Lleyton Hewitt today. Even with 55 aces did Karlovic lose to the Australian 6-7 (1), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3.

Even if he was defeated, he set a new ATP record for the number of aces in a Roland-Garros tournament.

The previous record was helf by Joachim Johansson with 51 and the old record for the French Open 2009 was 37 by the American Andy Roddick.

Joachim Johansson. You feel he would beat a wall...

Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu thinks Nadal will only come back stronger for the Rolan Garros. He's going to be a mad bee. And this time the balls won't fly as fast as in Madrid

Andy Murray told "He's the best on clay court in the World, maybe even of all time!"

Three times loser to Rafael Nadal Novak Djokovic Told: "Playing against Nadal on Clay Court is the ultimate challenge. His physical and mental strenght. You're always asking yourself how you're going to play him."

Murray adds: "It's very demanding to play a 3 hours match against him. You have to play safely against him and take some chances when possible. That's why he never lost this Grand Chelem. Beating him in 3 sets is only possible from 2 or 3 good players, and that would mean he's in a bad day and they are in a VERY good day."

Finally, Djokovic adds: "He never gives up one single point. Whether is 5-5 of he's losing 1-5, he plays the same... to win. He just doesn't care about the score."

Hope you now understand better Nadal's mentality and how hard it must be to play him.

From: F-P AgencyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013148795725284563.post-53819504390645452212009-05-21T20:27:00.000-07:002009-05-21T20:28:20.052-07:00Who will win 2009 Wimbledon?Tennis Players all around the world,

please bet on your winner:

Here are the favourites for Winning the 2009 Wimbledon Open

The Horse (Nadal)

The Train (Federer)

The Joker (Djokovic)

The RedHead (Murray)

Somebody else?

What do you think?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
